“[10] Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation.” [11] Then Moses pleaded with the Lord his God, and said: “Lord, why does Your wrath burn hot against Your people whom You have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? [12] …Turn from Your fierce wrath, and relent from this harm to Your people.” — Exodus 32:10 - 12 NKJV
Exodus 32 gives an account of how the Israelites in the wilderness pressured Aaron to make them an idol when they lost the tenacity to wait for Moses their leader, who was on Mount Sinai receiving instructions from the Lord to the people.
God was so angry with the Israelites that He wanted to destroy that entire generation and make Moses into the desired nation He planned to build through Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Exodus 32:10).
Moses could have rejoiced about God’s idea of making him into a great nation. However, he was a selfless leader. He didn’t want a name for himself, even though he had the opportunity. Had Moses consented to God’s initiative of destroying that stiff-necked generation of Israel, his lineage would have pioneered the nation of Israel we see today. But it’s not so.
Moses pleaded to God on the Israelites’ behalf using His own promises to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Furthermore, he spoke again with God that for the sake of future mockery by the Egyptians, He should forgive them, even if He chooses to punish them. Eventually, sanctions got meted out to the Israelites for their disobedience. Although some died, that entire Israelite generation wasn’t wiped from the face of the earth.
A selfless leader like Moses isn’t mindful of what he can get from his labours even if he has a lot of privileges. Such leaders think of the next generation and what God has for their future organisations and families. And because of this understanding, they don’t mind sacrificing their comforts and abandoning the enjoyment of their privileges to endure present hardships for a glorious future benefit.
What kind of leader are you? Are you so concerned with the “now” that you’re refusing to tap into the realm of God for a visionary future Repent! Selfishness has never had a glorious end. Pray for people, your team and the people you lead (including your partner as a man). Even though they’ll miss doing the right thing multiple times, have the consciousness that you’re building them unto God. I tell you that there shall be a glorious end.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, use situations to remove every sting of selfishness from my heart, that I’ll serve You acceptably and care about the interests of others rather than myself. Amen!
