Do Nothing Out of Vain Conceit

[3] “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,” – Philippians 2:3 (NIV)

Probably, you’ve read several times in Philippians 2:3 that “Do nothing out of selfish ambition…”. But have you considered what is written after that part? Vain conceit! What does that mean? Because it’s part of the things, every believer must eliminate it as a motive behind all their actions.

Conceit is a term that means excessive pride in oneself. So, yes, some people do things in this life not because they need to but because they are too proud of what they know or the skills they have, and they think they are the best in the world for that. It can be manifested in talents, sporting competitions, or even ministerial roles. But as believers, we are not supposed to do anything with that motive behind it. And that is serious.

This command is somehow personal and not so general because people cannot read others’ thoughts or motives behind their actions. But God can and does check our motives (see Proverbs 16:2). When you value others above yourself, regardless of societal status or financial position, it will actually help you remain humble in treating others well. That is what scripture says. Remember that you’ll not take anything out of this world. So, don’t let what you have make you see people of less value.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for saving me. Fill my thoughts with the humble mindset of Christ, treating and valuing people well as You do them. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
