A Brother Is Born for a Time of Adversity

[17] “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” – Proverbs 17:17 (NIV)

An old adage says, “Blood is thicker than water.” Is that true? I’ll say yes because scripture backs it up, although I am unsure whether the person who coined this quote did it out of scriptural revelation. In Proverbs 17:17, the Bible says a friend loves at all times (regardless of the seasons in life), and a brother is born for a time of adversity. Before we can understand this scripture very well, it is essential to know the meaning of the words used.

The word “friend” is used in the verse above to refer to an associate or companion. It could also mean a husband (no wonder it is best for couples to be friends first as they date and even in their marriage) or a neighbour. Also, the word “brother” in the verse means a relative, usually from the same family or parents. Let me tell you something.

Have you realised that many siblings, as they grow, don’t really check up on themselves? That happens especially among brothers since girls are more relational and can check up on one another. You may have realised that family members (especially in Africa, where I hail from) get together only when something happens – be it a wedding ceremony or funeral. I just want you to understand that those things shouldn’t surprise you because they are scriptural. You are more likely to have your friend stay with you for more extended periods of time than your own sibling. Treat it as normal, and don’t think your siblings don’t love you. They do, but will likely show their best only when bad things happen.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, help me cultivate meaningful Christ-minded friendships as I live to fulfil Your will and face the issues that arise in life. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
