Why Did Jesus Say “The Poor You Will Always Have with You” in the Bible?

In every nation in this world, there are both poor and rich people. There is no balance in terms of the level of wealth everywhere. I remember that when I was a child, I used to think that if governments shared equal money among everyone, poverty would be solved. But as I grew older and understood more about how things work in this life, I realised that when Jesus said in Mark 14:7 that “… the poor you will always have with you”, it will always be true. No matter how well a country’s economy is, there will still be some of its citizens who are poor. But why is that true? Let’s delve deeper.

Wisdom is better than wealth.

Do you remember when God came to King Solomon and asked him what He (God) wanted him (Solomon) to do for him after making an enormous sacrifice in God’s temple that touched His heart? Solomon didn’t request wealth, but for wisdom (see 2 Chronicles 1:6-10). But look at God’s reply to King Solomon after he made his request:

[11] Then God said to Solomon: “Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked riches or wealth or honor or the life of your enemies, nor have you asked long life—but have asked wisdom and knowledge for yourself, that you may judge My people over whom I have made you king— [12] wisdom and knowledge are granted to you; and I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings have had who were before you, nor shall any after you have the like.”

2 Chronicles 1:11-12 (NKJV)

Just read that patiently. We are talking about King Solomon, the wealthiest man who ever lived on the face of this Earth. God gave him wisdom upon his request, and in addition, added riches, wealth and honour. That means, wisdom is better than wealth. If you get divine wisdom, the riches, wealth and honour will follow. But if you chase after wealth without wisdom, you will get the money, but it won’t last because you won’t have the capacity to sustain it.

Hate poverty but don’t love money.

God doesn’t want any of His believers to be poor. No! He wants everyone to be rich. However, He doesn’t want people to develop a love for money. Why? Because the moment that happens, it’ll get in the way of serving Him with a clean heart. Hate poverty, but don’t love money. Instead, love God and work with all your heart as if you are doing it for Him. He will carry you through in this life.
