Three Ways to Overcome Doubt

Doubt is one of the enemies of faith in Christ. Doubtful thoughts aren’t from God. They are evil suggestions from the devil that comes into memory, especially when life gets tough. If the Bible says we should resist the devil, and he’ll flee (James 4:8), then you have to deal with all doubtful thoughts by the Word of God. Remember that you’re not in charge of thoughts that come into your mind. But you choose which ones stay.

So, how should you Christians overcome doubt toward God in your life according to the standards of scripture?

You’re not in charge of thoughts that come into your mind. But you choose which ones stay.

1. Cast them down

Where doubt is, a question about the excellency of God’s knowledge indirectly comes to mind. Everything in this world is created by Christ and for Christ (see Colossians 1:16). Therefore, everything (both visible and invisible) must be subject to the obedience of Christ, including your mind.

Don’t allow the devil to use your mind as a playground. Whenever he suggests doubts as imaginations in your mind, use God’s power in you to cast them down immediately (see 2 Corinthians 10:5). Remember that the God in you is greater than the devil. Hence, even satan knows he must be subject to God’s Word. Resist him fiercely.

2. Remember your personal testimonies

Another powerful way to overcome doubt is through the remembrance of personal testimonies. God has done so many things for us, but some are so notable that they cannot be forgotten in our lives.

For instance, if God saved you from a car accident in a vehicle where everybody died, that incident will register in your memory so strongly. Meanwhile, it’s easy for you to forget to thank God for the air you breathe each day. Yes, some miracles can’t be forgotten in our lives. And thankfully, we can use them as faith reference points to overcome doubt.

Jesus knew this. So, to help some doubting Israelites overcome their doubts, He told them to believe in his works if they don’t believe in Him as the Messiah (see John 10:38). In fact, Some Israelites believed in Jesus just because of the miracles he did while on earth.

If you’ll forget the little things God does for you, don’t forget the mighty miracles. Register them in your memory. So that when you struggle to overcome doubt, you can remind yourself how God has been faithful in your life for years.

3. Pray with others in one accord

In Matthew 18:20, Jesus stated that where two or three are gathered together in His name, He’s present in their midst. Jesus wants us to be of one accord whenever we gather as brethren in Christ, especially to pray. Doubt loses its effect on the reception of prayer answers when two or more Christians gather in one accord to pray to God.

For example, in Acts 12:5, the Bible says,

Peter, therefore, was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

When Peter was miraculously led outside the prison by an angel, he came knocking at the door. A female called Rhoda came to open the door and recognised that it was Peter. She didn’t open Peter’s but rushed inside to tell the other brethren that Peter was at the door. The brethren didn’t believe her and said to her that “…You’re out of your mind…” – (Acts 12:15 NIV).

These people prayed, but some doubted God’s saving power to reach Peter in a high-security prison. However, though some believers doubted, it wasn’t enough to prevent heaven from responding to their corporate prayers.

Sometimes, involving other Christians, at least two people in the brethren, is essential when praying, especially over hard-pressing issues. You’ll see that God will grant your corporate prayer request said together in agreement. That will help you overcome doubt about God’s power. Do not underestimate the power of corporate prayer.
