Prosperity Demands That You Don’t Love Pleasure

[17] “He who loves pleasure will be a poor man; He who loves wine and oil will not be rich.” – Proverbs 21:17 (NKJV)

Solomon is the richest man who has ever lived on the face of this Earth. Nobody knows his net worth compared to today’s list of rich people on the internet. But with all the gold and treasures he had, obviously, nobody could ever match his level of wealth. Despite all Solomon had, he wrote in Proverbs 21:17 that anybody who loves pleasure will be a poor man. Interesting!

Who liked chilling more than Solomon in the Bible? He loved many women and had all the pleasure he desired (including sexual pleasure with over 500 women). He had everything. Nevertheless, he counsels us that loving pleasure is an enemy to becoming wealthy. So God wants you to enjoy your wealth but not to love it. Ever-increasing prosperity demands that you don’t love pleasure.

Let me tell you something profound. Many people have not accelerated high above their financial goals because they spend much of what they earn on unnecessary things. If you are one of such people, you need discipline. But this discipline I’m talking about isn’t the one that is self-motivated but God-inspired. The Holy Spirit in you has a fruit called self-control, which helps you, as a believer, exercise restraint in many areas of your life. Just because you have money doesn’t mean you should spend it anyhow. Allocate some resources for pleasure, but limit them and don’t indulge in sin using them.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your provision in my life. Help me exercise restraint and wisdom in using the resources You have given me. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
