“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke [is] easy, and my burden is light.” - Matthew 11:29-30 NKJV
It’s one thing to come to Jesus, and another to take His yoke upon you. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus promises rest for anyone who comes to Him. Then in verse 29, He adds that those who come to Him should take His yoke upon them.
What’s a yoke? It is a bar or frame of wood by which two oxen or other draught animals are joined at the heads or necks, enabling them to pull a plough, cart, etc. So Jesus is saying that anybody who takes His yoke upon him becomes a part of His mission to revolutionalize the world with the gospel. But He adds another thing for us to do by grace: “learn of Me!” How do you learn of Jesus? By obeying His teaching (putting them to practice).
When you do these two things (taking Jesus’ yoke upon you and learning of Him), then you’ll find rest (cessation of wandering) for your soul. Without practising these two, you cannot lighten the burdens of your life. Nothing is too difficult for God. Neither is any kingdom agenda too huge or hard for the One in you to empower you to handle. Jesus says His burden is light, probably because He carries it with you since you get yoked together with Him.
Let go of the troubles, hurts, past mistakes, and offences in your heart. Lighten the burdens of your life by learning of Jesus and becoming a part of His mission by serving Him.
You’re a blessing.
