Keeping God’s Commands Is What Counts

[19] “Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commands is what counts.” – 1 Corinthians 7:19 (NIV)

Have you ever been invited to settle an issue between two people only to realise later that what they are arguing about is unnecessary? How do you feel after settling that? For me, I will feel like these people are just whiling away time. And of a truth, I have seen these things several times in my life. What am I saying here? Focus on what is necessary, not what isn’t.

There were some people back in the early church days who were divided because of the doctrine of physical circumcision. Some people thought that physical circumcision was a necessity to confirm your salvation before God. So, any believer who wasn’t circumcised wasn’t seen as a legitimate child of God. And that was worrying because it wasn’t those days where there were hospitals like we do today. Many men in those days lived several years without their sexual organs circumcised. Think about that. As little distinguishing as this doctrine is, it caused a lot of division in the church. Today, things are different.

Knowledge has increased, and many believers know that being born again isn’t dependent on sets of dos and don’ts. Instead, it is about believing in Christ’s resurrection in your heart and confessing His Lordship over your life (see Romans 10:10). Circumcision still counts, but God does it to the heart. Don’t let people’s doctrines deceive you. Keeping God’s commands is what counts. Focus on it.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your grace and mercy in my life. Help me to know You better each day as I live to fulfil what You have said concerning my life. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
