Hope Deferred Makes the Heart Sick

[12] “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.” – Proverbs 13:12 (NKJV)

The first time I heard the word “defer,” I was a fresh university student receiving orientation on managing my life on campus. The instructor mentioned cases where people decided to postpone some courses they would have done to the next year due to some private reasons known by them. Then I realised that some people have choices.

When the Bible says hope deferred makes the heart sick, it means that when something or someone you have put your hope in fails due to postponement of what you were promised to get, it will affect your heart. You see, God knows these things will happen. That is why He has warned us in the Word several times not to put our hope in any man but in He God. You will save yourself from a lot of disappointment when you accept the truth that humans will disappoint you. When I talk about humans, I’m not only referring to those wicked lads in business who are bent on cheating others for profit. No! I am also talking about some believers in the body of Christ, especially those who are not trustworthy when it comes to managing the things entrusted to them.

Be careful what and who you put your hope in. No matter how nice a boss, a company, or anything your life depends on, never put your hope in it. Always trust in the Lord to fulfil your needs.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your immense love and care over my life. Help me always live in the consciousness that I put my trust in You. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
