Do Not Love the Things of the World

[15] “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” – 1 John 2:15 (NKJV)

In a world where materialism rules the affairs of many lives, many people work or try to get money to spend on worldly things. For example, some people who earn more money spend more on material things instead of supporting ministries. Why? Because of materialism. Am I against having material possessions? No! But when such things take much preeminence in your life, then there is a problem.

The Bible says in 1 John 2:15 that we should not love the world or the things of the world. And if we do, the love of the Father is not in us. Wait a minute. “Love not the world” looks too generalistic, right? It might be difficult for a layperson to understand that statement, and that is okay. However, more explanation is given in the preceding verses for understanding.

I want to dwell on “the things of the world” part of the scripture. Anything manufactured on this Earth forms part of the things of the world. It includes cars, mobile devices, and clothes, just to mention a few. No scripture has barred believers from liking these things. But we are told not to love them. That is, we shouldn’t allow the presence or absence of these things in our lives to be of so much concern to us that it takes away our love for the things of the world. But you may ask, how do those things take us away? It’s simple. You make time for what you prioritise. Isn’t it? So, if God isn’t your first priority and it’s other things like your business, marriage, work or school, then you are missing the point, and as such, you may seldom go to church. But things shouldn’t be like that. Do not love the things of the world because when you pursue God, those things will come effortlessly.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for loving me. Help me keep You as my top priority for all the days of my life. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
