[18] “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,” – Ephesians 5:18 (NIV)
In the days of the early church, wine was one of the most popular drinks people drank, especially during events like weddings and much partying. And Jesus wasn’t against it. In fact, His first miracle was turning water into wine under a wedding. Imagine that! And so, because of that, some people have formed doctrines, saying that drinking alcohol isn’t sinful before God. And because of that, believers can drink. Excuse me!
Apart from wine being used as a delicacy, some believers used it to prevent stomach illnesses (see 1 Timothy 5:23). For Timothy, Paul cautioned him to take wine but was notable for drinking a lot of water, especially during fasting. So Timothy didn’t like wine. But Paul, his father in the Lord, did advise him to take it because of his stomach ailments. Your case is different.
If God knows alcoholism is your weakness, He will bar you from taking even a little of it because He knows it can destroy your life. But again, wine is different from alcohol, although some wines have some alcoholic percentage in them. So, for the scripture to say, “Do not get drunk on wine,” then it means don’t take alcohol or any wine or drink with even the slightest alcoholic content in it. If you do, it’ll lead you to debauchery (meaning immorality), which is improper to be said about you. Remember that whatever God tells you not to do, He has His best interests at heart. Never flout His commands.
You are a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me to always stay firm in Your commands. May I never transgress Your ways. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
