[21] “It is a sin to despise one’s neighbor, but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy.” – Proverbs 14:21 (NIV)
In Africa, my continent, it’s common to see people stricken with need. Several people don’t even have enough money to afford three square meals daily, which is challenging. Fortunately, several non-governmental organisations have been established to combat this trend, but it’s still not enough. NGOs may focus on the masses, but what about that needy fellow who lives next door to you?
Proverbs 14:21 says that it is a sin to despise your neighbour. Then, the Preacher adds that “… but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy.” Analysing this scripture critically, the “needy” Solomon is talking about here is the next-door neighbour he emphasises in the first part of the scripture. And the word “neighbour” there doesn’t only refer to the one whose house is near you. It also comprises people close to you who are suffering.
Dear one, kindness pays, especially when expressed to people in need. There is a blessing that comes with it, and that blessing is from the Lord. Even if you can’t afford to dash certain things in your life to the poor, don’t give yourself that excuse to be benevolent in other things unto them. The God who blesses and no man can curse will keep blessing you so you can have more in abundance to share with those in need.
You are a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for blessing me with provision. Root out selfishness from my life as I share my possessions to help those in need. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
