Being Patient Is Better Than Conquering Cities

“Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.” — Proverbs 16:32 NIV

When it comes to defining greatness, many people check the number of their achievements. But Jesus described it from a kingdom perspective. He said in Matthew 20:26 NKJV, “… whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.” So, according to Jesus, greatness before God is found in humble servitude, not in achievements.

Greatness before God is found in humble servitude, not in achievements

However, Solomon expands this whole wisdom about greatness by highlighting patience. In Proverbs 16:32, he says a patient person is better than a warrior. In other words, being patient is better than conquering cities. That implies that patience is a necessary virtue to possess if you’re thinking about doing exploits.

Some servants of God do whatever comes into their minds without consulting God. Although it’s not bad, doing things out of a rush can be very dangerous.

You don’t have to be fast to reach where God wants you to be. God is the director of your life. He determines the speed with which you ought to move, not yourself. If He tells you to be patient, control yourself and be patient.

You may have all the money and resources to move on to the next step. However, God is thinking about generations through your present actions. He knows where you’ll end with anything you start. Silent the external voices contrary to God’s Word and follow Christ diligently.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer

God, I pray that I’ll grow in patience. Teach me how to obey You when it doesn’t make sense and when to hold on to activities You’ve not sent me to do, even if I have everything I need to do it. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
