A Word of Advice to the Lazy Person

[6] “Go to the ant, you sluggard!
Consider her ways and be wise,
[7] Which, having no captain,
Overseer or ruler,
[8] Provides her supplies in the summer,
And gathers her food in the harvest.” Proverbs 6:6-8 (NKJV)

Laziness is one of the most destructive lifestyles a person can ever take upon himself. Idleness has landed people in places they never dreamt of. Can I tell you something profound? It is not natural to not desire to work. What I am saying doesn’t refer to males only or females only. No! It applies to every human being. If you are a woman, you may not be able to bench press like a man can do in terms of work, but that doesn’t mean you should relax and be on only the receiving end. If you do that, it doesn’t befit you. As a stay-at-home mom, don’t think you don’t have to work. That period should shift your work responsibility to managing the home, and you cannot afford to mess that up, especially if you are living with your husband, who works so hard.

Solomon wrote a solemn word of advice to the lazy person in Proverbs 6:6-11 using the ant as a case study. Ants don’t have any systematic hierarchy of authority. They have no ruler, captain or overseer. But when it comes to teaming up to do something as crucial as gathering food, they do it so effectively. Because God made them so light in weight, they are well aware that a slight change of weather, like that of a simple rainfall, can kill a host of them. So, when it’s summer, when rains aren’t so frequent, they gather food for themselves in wait for other unfavourable weather conditions. In Africa, where there aren’t four seasons, ants are more commonly seen throughout the year doing the same things King Solomon described in the scripture.

Can you learn from ants? Yes, you are not weak like the ants, but life is in seasons. There are seasons of plenty and that of drought. What if you get laid off tomorrow? Do you have any plan in place to sustain you financially until you get a new job? You see, don’t live as if there is no tomorrow. Work diligently, child of God, always having it at the back of your mind that time changes.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your Spirit’s empowerment upon me to work. Help me to put up the maximum effort I can to do whatever is placed in my hands well. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
