A Question for a Question

[27] “Then they came again to Jerusalem. And as He was walking in the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to Him. [28] And they said to Him, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority to do these things?” [29] But Jesus answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one question; then answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things: [30] The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men? Answer Me.” – Mark 11:27-30 (NKJV)

One of the most predominant things the Pharisees and Sadducees tried to do to make Jesus sin was to intrigue Him with unnecessary questions. They wanted pieces of evidence of wrongdoing from Him to use to prosecute Him in court since they wanted Him dead. But after several attempts, they didn’t succeed. So, even when Jesus was arrested and brought before Pilate, the Bible says they hired false witnesses to testify against Him (see Mark 14:55-57).

Jesus was (and is still) flawless, but it didn’t come without a cost. In Mark 11:27-30, the Bible records that the chief priests, scribes, and elders came to Him, asking Jesus by what authority He performed the miracles and who gave it to Him. Jesus didn’t answer them immediately, not because He didn’t know the answer but because He knew those people had mentioned it to find a way to trap Him. Guess what Jesus did? He also asked them a question that sparked a discussion amongst them. See that? A question for a question.

You owe nobody an explanation as to how you ought to live fulfilling God’s promises in your life. In your interactions with others, be cautious about what you say. Some people who try to engage you in conversation are not doing so because they genuinely want to hang out with you but because they want to get something against you to gossip about. Just be careful.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for guiding and protecting me. Help me to live wisely and speak prudently in my interactions with others. In the name of Jesus, amen!
