[57] “And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honour except in his own town and in his own home.” [58] And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.” – Matthew 13:57-58 (NIV)
Did you know that many ministers of God are not well-treated in their own homes and towns? Yes, that’s it. Some of these ministers can go out and use God’s anointing to do powerful things for God’s glory. But as soon as they return home, and sometimes, to their main churches, everybody sees them as so ordinary that they start disrespecting them. The question is, why does this happen?
Well, there are several reasons. But I want to talk about one. That is, familiarity. When a child grows up in a particular town and matures to start doing exploits for God, many people who may have seen him grow up still look at him from a natural perspective, not a godly one. In Jesus’ case, the same thing happened. He went to Nazareth to preach the gospel. But they said,
[54] …“Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? [55] Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? [56] And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?” — Matthew 13:54-56 (NKJV)
Look at that. They viewed Jesus as the same man whom they’d seen growing up as a carpenter’s son. So, they took offence at Him. That’s why Jesus said, “A prophet is not without honour except in his own town and in his own home.” That means a servant of God will likely not be respected and treated with dignity and value when he goes to his own hometown. So, if you are experiencing that, don’t be surprised. If they did it to Jesus, they’ll do it to you also. As personal advice to you, don’t start an establishment (be it a ministry, business or any form of institution) in your hometown, unless God tells you to. Even if you do that (without God’s direction), your level of success will not progress that fast.
You are a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for giving me the honour to serve You. Help me to do it effectively for Your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
