by[18] And it happened, as He was alone praying, that His disciples joined Him, and He asked them, saying, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” [19] So they answered and said, “John the Baptist, but some say Elijah; and others say that one of the old prophets has risen again.” [20] He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said, “The Christ of God.” – Luke 9:18-20 (NKJV)
One of the most critical questions you must ask yourself as a believer in Christ is, who is Jesus to you personally? The reason why many people profess to be Christians, yet without depth and intimacy with God, is because they are living by the popular opinion of Jesus, not as a person they have encountered individually through divine fellowship with Him, and that is truly devastating.
Jesus once asked the disciples, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” And they replied, saying, “John the Baptist, but some say Elijah; and others say that one of the old prophets has risen again.” See that? All those things people were saying about Him were wrong. Meanwhile, that is what they were living by. Jesus, not wanting the disciples to also live by these wrong popular opinions, asked again, “But who do you say that I am?” Note that that question was directed unto all the disciples, not some. However, Peter answered and said, “The Christ of God.” In Matthew 16:17 (NKJV), Jesus said to Peter that,
… “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.”
Jesus said that because what Peter said came out of revelation, not by popular opinions. I want to ask you, who is Jesus to you personally? Is He the One your pastor has been preaching about, or the One you’ve encountered in your aloneness with Him? If you don’t know Jesus by revelation, it’s time to step up and pursue a deeper intimacy with Him.
