Do Not Pay Attention to Every Word People Say

[21] “Do not pay attention to every word people say, or you may hear your servant cursing you” – Ecclesiastes 7:21 (NIV)

Words are one of the free things God has given to every human to use. In fact, nobody pays anybody anything to talk. That’s why some people say, “talk is cheap.” Yes, it is. But the content in your words can either harm you (and others) or benefit you (and others). In Colossians 4:6 (NKJV), the Bible says,

“Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.”

So, for you, the believer in Christ, the scripture charges you to speak nicely to people. Why? Because such words minister grace to others. But what about what others say? Colossians 4:6 speaks about what you say to others (outflow), but Ecclesiastes 7:21 deals with what you hear from others (inflow). In that verse, the scripture says, “Do not pay attention to every word people say, or you may hear your servant cursing you.”

Think about this! If you take to heart what everyone says, especially stories about you, you’ll hear heartbreaking things from people you don’t expect to do that. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence in this world, affecting many relationships, marriages, friendships, and even business partnerships.

Your heart is the most critical area in your life, and one thing that can destroy its good health is filthy words. But words are also used very commonly. So, as a child of God, guard your heart with all diligence. Intentionally withdraw from some close associations with people just to keep your heart at peace. There’ll always be people who don’t qualify to say things about you and much more to think about saying evil things about you. Just let people be with what they say, and keep your peace.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for giving me a clean heart when I got saved. Help me maintain its health in perfect condition by carefully guarding what goes into it. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
