Discretion Will Protect You

[11] “Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.” – Proverbs 2:11 (NIV)

Have you ever watched a TV programme that started by saying, “Viewer discretion is advised?” I’ve seen it multiple times. Because I abhor seeing sensitive content, I would change the channel instead of watching that programme. However, after much observation from people I have lived with and talked to, people, unlike me, disregard that notification from the TV stations and continue watching such programmes. It’s even more unfortunate as children are also exposed to these things. And also, with the constant rise in how people consume pornographic things online, this has become even harder for people just to put away.

In Proverbs 2:11, the Bible says that discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. In other words, paying attention to what you must consciously choose to see and not to see will prevent you from encountering bad things that have the potential of even dampening your spirit. Haven’t you realised that those who watch these obscene things don’t end up developing a healthy mindset in life? In terms of porn, it affects a person’s healthy view of sex in the brain, causing problems in marriages. All these can be avoidable if and only if you choose to honour and obey what the Bible is telling you today.

The devil is an expert in making you think that there’s pleasure in sin. But in reality, it’s not so. It’ll rather leave you with guilt and shame when you indulge yourself in it. Don’t buy into the idea that you can do anything you like because you are free in Christ. No! Keep in step with the Holy Ghost, and guard your eyes and ears from harmful content.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your grace and mercy in my life. Help me be discreet in what I watch so I can maintain a healthy mindset in Christ that seeks to honour You daily. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
