“For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.” — I John 2:16 NKJV
The eye is the access point to the soul. Whatever we see has an impression on our thoughts, will and emotions. So just as we have to keep our hearts with diligence, we must watch over our eyes too.
In a generation where there are fast advancements in technology, what competes for our attention has increased because now, it’s not only the physical environment but also electronic media that contend for our attention. For this cause, it’s become easy for the devil to lure many of us into the lust of the eyes. How? By making us crave to have what we have seen others have. For me, I see that this affects more women than men, particularly through social media feeds.
I quite remember one lady in church telling me she wanted to have six packs because she saw a female athlete on Instagram having that same body shape. When I heard it, I laughed because it wasn’t possible for her as we spoke. I said that to her because she’s not an athlete. Secondly, she doesn’t exercise as that lady does daily. So instead of this sister trying all her means to get the body shape of another woman, she should concentrate on becoming all that God has called her to be.
Child of God, understand that life is in seasons. You don’t have to lust after the possessions of others just because they are lovely. Nobody’s life is as good as one presents it for others to see, especially on social media. People are facing terrible life issues and still dress well. So when you see such people, you’ll think their lives are better than yours.
Don’t be deceived. Don’t be moved by cravings for material things. They are all temporary. God created your eyes to behold Jesus in all things, not to serve as an instrument to wave covetousness in your soul. Live in consecration unto God.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Father, I pray against the lust of the eyes in my life. I pray that You’ll draw my consciousness to the truth that life doesn’t consist of the abundance of possessions, nor is it about the comparison. Deliver me from the spirit of competition as You help me to become all that You created me to be in the name of Jesus. Amen!
