[7] But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7 (NKJV)
Many people think God is good and because He wants all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth, so He doesn’t reject some people when it comes to certain things. Saul was one of those God rejected as king because of his disobedience. And after doing that, God told the prophet Samuel to go and anoint Saul’s replacement.
Interestingly, when Samuel went to the temple to anoint one of Jesse’s sons as king, he thought God had selected the one who appeared bold and had good physical stature. So, when Eliab presented himself before the prophet, Samuel said,
“Surely the LORD’s anointed is before Him!” – 1 Samuel 16:6 (NKJV)
But God told him not to look at Eliab’s appearance. You see, man looks at physical appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. And that is what He uses to choose a person for a specific assignment. I want us to learn something here.
Samuel didn’t have a problem hearing God. If he hadn’t heard what God said about Eliab, he would have anointed the wrong king for Israel, and that would have cost the kingdom so much. So, as a leader, especially as an employer, don’t rely solely on the curriculum vitae of prospective employees to choose a person for work, particularly for ministerial work. Let God guide you, and don’t be in a rush.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for grace and mercy. Help me to keep a clean heart before You every day of my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
