“And he said, ‘Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted, for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you. I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and where you made a vow to me. Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.’ ” — Genesis 31:12-13 NIV
One plague in our adult generation is the hating of jobs because of bad bosses. We must remember that we are in the world, but not of the world. So, as long as this persists, the world will draw believers’ strengths to work just as Pharaoh did to the Israelites in Egypt (Exodus 1:8-14).
Sometimes, the injustice is too much. When bad bosses see how intelligent, faithful, resilient, and wise a Christian subordinate is, he tends to use him to do many tasks, and in most cases, with little compensation. This same thing happened to Jacob.
Jacob took care of Laban’s sheep for six years. He also worked to receive his two daughters in marriage for fourteen years. Yet, he was cheated. Despite all these injustices, Jacob didn’t complain.
One time, Jacob had a dream. In the dream, the angel of the Lord gave him instructions on how to separate himself and his flock from Laban’s. So when Jacob decided to leave Laban’s home, Laban pleaded with him to stay (because he saw he was getting blessed because of Jacob.) Laban wanted to cage Jacob while cheating on him. He’s a perfect representation of today’s bad bosses in many companies.
In an attempt to lure Jacob, Laban told Jacob to name his wages (Genesis 30:28.) While this offer seemed reasonable, it depended on how Jacob would take it. If he mishandled this opportunity, he would continue to work like a slave to Laban. He remembered the dream the angel of the Lord gave him and implemented it wisely before Laban. In the end, Jacob’s flocks became stronger than Laban’s. After all these things happened, Jacob fled from Laban.
Friend, only God can give you perfect guidance to deal with bad bosses. Your strategy might never work or even land you in extra trouble. You may be treated harshly at your workplace. But, can I tell you something? Follow God to deal with your bad boss. His ways are higher than yours. When you submit to His authority, you’ll never be disadvantaged. It shall end well with you!
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
