[4] But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, [5] “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” [6] This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.” – John 12:4-6 (NKJV)
Treasurers of ministries, especially those where finances are not well structured in banking and accounting, usually face temptations. If the treasurer lives in dire conditions, it becomes more dangerous because that person can steal from the church coffers.
During Jesus’ time, there weren’t digital banking monitoring systems. So, Judas Iscariot, who was Jesus’ treasurer, kept all the money in a bag they called a “money bag.” Because Jesus was more about ministering to others, He didn’t constantly check how much they had as a team. So, because of that, the Bible said emphatically that Judas Iscariot kept stealing from the coffers. We all know that Jesus is all-knowing, meaning He knows everything that happens. But He still didn’t punish Judas, not because He didn’t want to, but to teach him how to check his heart.
In my few years in ministry, I have seen treasurers and financial secretaries of churches dismissed. I have also seen company treasurers sacked and some politicians jailed due to financial embezzlement. It appears that many people want to be rich, but only a few have the requisite knowledge on managing finances well.
Can God trust you with millions, and you’ll handle it well? According to Luke 16:11, the true riches in God’s kingdom are entrusted, not worked for. Check your heart, dear treasurer, because if you don’t do it, you will indirectly allow the devil to lure you into stealing and think nothing bad will happen to you. May God protect you from greed.
You are a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your financial provision in my life. Help me always keep my heart in check against any greed in my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
