Fasting the God Way Is Not a Hunger Strike for You

[16] “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.” – Matthew 6:16 (NKJV)

Back in the days of Jesus’ earthly ministry, people used to fast for some days every week. That was done primarily by the Pharisees, whom Jesus cited as hypocrites several times in the four gospel books (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) because of their evil behaviour.

One thing about those Pharisees was that they liked disfiguring their faces when they fasted so it would portray to others that they were fasting. Jesus said that it isn’t a good practice because it has no eternal reward. Thankfully, many believers in this generation don’t do such things. But since it is written in the scriptures, it means that it is potentially happening in some lives.

When you disfigure your face, people will know you are hungry, and it won’t help you to fast in privacy. But when you put up a nice face and concentrate on God to grant you your request as you fast, your mind will go less on food and more on God, which will also reduce the suspicions of others.

Dear one, fasting the God way is not a hunger strike for you. Instead, it is for your own benefit to get closer to God. Don’t feel bad to fast; prioritise it because it will help you massively.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your great grace in allowing me to fast intermittently so I can get closer to You. I know You are my help in doing this. Thank you, Jesus. Amen!
